Mercoin Completes Registration as a Cryptocurrency Exchange

Plans to Enable Purchase of Bitcoins with Mercari Sales Proceeds and More by the End of FY2023

Mercoin, Inc. ("Mercoin") was established on April 28, 2021, as a subsidiary of Mercari, Inc. ("Mercari") to design and develop cryptoasset and blockchain services. Today, June 17, 2022 (Friday), Mercoin is proud to announce that it has completed registration as a cryptocurrency exchange* in accordance with the Payment Services Act.

Having successfully registered as an official cryptocurrency exchange, Mercoin will begin enabling users to exchange proceeds and points earned from their sales on the Mercari app, as well as their Merpay balance, for bitcoins. The company plans to implement this change by the end of FY2023. Also, in addition to providing payment, fund transfer, and credit services through Merpay, Mercoin aims to create an environment that makes financial services even more convenient for users by allowing them to purchase and manage cryptoassets all on the same platform. 

Moving forward, Mercoin will continue to take on bold new challenges in the fields of cryptoassets and blockchain technologies.

  • The list of Crypto-asset Exchange Service Providers is published on the Financial Services Agency, and contains the following points to note.
  • The crypto-assets handled by the Crypto-asset Exchange Service Providers listed in this list are merely confirmed to fall under the definition under the Payment Services Act, considering the explanation of the Crypto-asset Exchange Service Providers.
  • Financial Services Agency and Local Financial Bureau do not guarantee or endorse the value of these crypto-assets in this list. Crypto-assets do not necessarily have assets backing them.
  • Please be aware of the following points when trading crypto-assets.
  • The cryptoassets treated by cryptoasset exchange service providers may differ from their current status.

 

Notes on the use of crypto-assets

  • Crypto-assets are not “legal tender” whose value is guaranteed by the government, such as Japanese Yen or US Dollar. They are electronic data exchanged on the Internet.
  • The price of crypto-assets may fluctuate. The price of crypto-assets may plummet and you may lose money.
  • Crypto-asset exchange service providers need to be registered with Financial Services Agency and Local Financial Bureau. When using crypto-asset exchange service, please confirm whether it is a registered service provider or not on the websites of Financial Services Agency and Local Financial Bureau.
  • When trading crypto-assets, be sure to receive explanations from the service provider you intend to use and fully understand the details and risks (price fluctuation risk, cyber security risk, etc.) of the transaction, including whether the service provider has received administrative punishment from Financial Services Agency and Local Finance Bureau.
  • Consultations regarding crypto-assets and fraudulent coins are increasing. Please be aware of scams and malicious business practices that take advantage of the buzz of crypto assets or take advantage of the entry of crypto-assets exchange business.
